Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.
Consider this a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.
An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The narrative starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that come with long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience today.
Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
