Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
