Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
