EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
